About
What this site is
caoversight.org is a public index of reports published by California state oversight bodies. It covers statewide audits, inspector general investigations, policy studies, enforcement actions, and a set of local pilots — 21,359 reports from 21 oversight bodies, spanning 1962 to present.
The site organizes those reports by the body that produced them, makes them searchable by full text, and links each one back to the originating body’s official source. It does not editorialize their findings.
What gets indexed
Reports come from 21 California oversight bodies grouped into five functional categories:
- Audit — the California State Auditor (CSA), the Little Hoover Commission (LHC), the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), and the State Controller’s Office (SCO), among others.
- Policy — the Bureau of State Audits, Cal ICH, FCMAT, and similar bodies that investigate systemic policy questions.
- Inspector General — the Office of Inspector General (OIG) and department-level IGs.
- Enforcement — the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC), RIPA, and related enforcement agencies.
- Local pilots — a sample of county-level bodies including LAFCO and county auditors, with coverage expanding over time.
How the bodies are grouped
The home page organizes all 21 bodies into those five functional categories. Each body has its own page listing its reports in reverse chronological order, with extracted text where available.
